Losing control
An operating system should be designed to give tight control of a computer. Users should decide what happens to their data, who has access to the information stored on the computer, and how to process the data locally.
Microsoft warns that its agentic AI Copilot could potentially install malware on their users' computers. That is the exact opposite of tight control. Until now, these agentic models have been experimental features, but Microsoft plans to integrate AI into its operating systems deeply.
Therefore, organizations and companies now have to consider even more when to use Microsoft products and when to use open-source alternatives to retain control of their data. It's not only about privacy matters like the Cloud Act, but it's also about the basic concept of what a user-controlled system is.
